The Embassy of Brazil is set to engage several high schools in Harare in cultural exchange programs during the year 2008 and a pilot project has already been successfully carried out at the Emerald Hill Children’s Home in Harare.
The Brazilian Embassy representatives, visited the Emerald Hill Orphanage on Friday the eight of February 2008, to meet the children, interact and engage them on cultural matters between the two countries.
About 60 children showed interest in the program by attending. The age-groups ranged from 4 to 18 years.
Brazilian Embassy Ambassadress, Mrs. Taunay immediately aroused the children‘s interest by merely mentioning that she was from Brazil, as most of the older boys then started whispering Rolnaldo and Ronaldinho’s names. However, the children knew little in terms of climate and geographical distances between the two nations; hence many paid undivided attention as Mrs. Taunay gave a brief description about the country and the similarities between Zimbabwe and Brazil.
“I was particularly impressed by the levels of interest the kids showed in wanting to know more about Brazil” said Mrs Taunay after the talking to the children.
Later it was time for the children to watch the film "Taina 2." All of them watched attentively while some paid attention on the sub titles that appeared on the film.
The Capoeira dance project coordinator, Tendai Ngirande, later took the children on another practice session in which the children happily participated.
Due to the success of this project, The Brazilian Embassy is already working with the authorities to see how cultural exchange programs can be used for the benefit of students learning in the high density areas of the city.
